Dr. Douglas Burkes is the Director of Research Operations within the Deputy Director for Operations Office at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In this role, he leads efforts to translate institutional strategy into practical, sustainable improvements that strengthen how research is planned and performed across the Laboratory. His work focuses on aligning people, processes, and technology to enable safe, secure, and high-impact research while advancing operational excellence.
With more than 19 years in the Department of Energy system, including 14 at PNNL, Dr. Burkes has built a career at the intersection of science, operations, and leadership. Before assuming his current role, he served within the Deputy Director for Science and Technology Office, overseeing research integrity, research operations, and research innovation. In this capacity, he championed responsible research practices, process integration, and innovation that support PNNL’s mission and scientific leadership.
Drawing on a deep technical foundation in nuclear fuels and materials research, Dr. Burkes has served as a project manager, line manager, and strategic advisor, helping shape PNNL’s strategy and institutional capabilities in nuclear materials. Known for bridging technical expertise with organizational improvement, he is dedicated to fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous advancement.
Doug earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Colorado School of Mines and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University.
