Before co-founding this nonprofit in 2006, my career was in advertising and communications. I worked my way through college as an admin at the local public television station, where I also hosted a weekly current events program. So I really earned two degrees from those college years: the B.A. in journalism to frame and hang on the wall, and the lived-experience “degree” earned through six years in broadcasting, behind the scenes and on the air. After college, I worked for ad agencies in Memphis, Jackson, and Dallas before going out on my own as a freelance writer and communications consultant for clients including Waste Management (22 years), Tesoro Corporation, and Baylor University Medical Center.
When Grant died in 2005, I knew I had another job to do. And the rest is history.
