About Me

Bio

Retirement opened the door to a new chapter in my life, one that led me towards a deep fascination with environmental conservation. Fuelled by an unwavering passion for the natural world, I actively support and collaborate with various environmental non-profit organizations. My name is Merrick, and I am wholeheartedly dedicated to preserving our planet’s biodiversity and protecting endangered species.

Since 2004, I have been actively involved with the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center (BPRC) and its predecessor. Over the years, I have contributed my efforts to various aspects, including rehabilitation, constructing mews, facilitating educational programming, and participating in prairie restoration projects. Presently, I proudly serve on the board of directors for the center, allowing me to provide valuable guidance and support.

My commitment to environmental causes extends beyond my involvement with the BPRC. Notably, I hold the position of Treasurer for EarthShare Texas and serve as the President of the Audubon Foundation of Texas. Furthermore, I am a dedicated board director for the Prairie and Timbers Audubon Society. These roles afford me the opportunity to make a tangible impact on environmental preservation efforts.

In addition to my leadership positions, I actively contribute financial resources to several environmental groups. Organizations like The Tree Kangaroo Conservation at Woodland Park Zoo, Audubon Texas, Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, Conservation International, Corall Barbados, and the Nature Conservancy benefit from my support. Through these contributions, I aim to further advance the cause of safeguarding our planet’s natural treasures and ensuring the survival of endangered species.

Being a board member allows me to play a crucial role in fundraising initiatives. I have successfully secured funding from esteemed organizations such as Prairie and Timbers Audubon, National Audubon, and the Nancy Ruth Fund. It gives me immense satisfaction to utilize my skills and connections to generate resources for environmental projects and initiatives.

As an avid bird monitor, I firmly believe that birds act as vital indicators of the overall health of our environment, upon which all humans depend. This passion for environmental monitoring and conservation strongly aligns with the mission and objectives of the BPRC. By actively participating in bird monitoring activities, I contribute to the collective understanding of our ecosystem and work towards its protection.

Outside of my environmental pursuits, my personal life is a source of joy and fulfillment. I have been married to my wonderful wife, Lorraine, for an incredible 54 years. Together, we have raised three daughters and one son, and we are blessed with five grandchildren. Family has always been a cherished part of my life, providing support and motivation in all my endeavors.

Prior to my retirement, I had a distinguished career spanning 27 years at Texas Instruments. During my time there, I achieved recognition for my exceptional work in processor design and engineering management, earning the prestigious title of Texas Instruments Fellow. This background in technology and engineering provides me with a unique perspective and skill set in tackling environmental challenges.

Academically, I hold a PhD in Physics from the University of Kentucky and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Rice University. My upbringing in Houston, Texas, led me to attend Bellaire High School, where my curiosity for the natural world and environmental conservation first took root.

In my leisure time, I engage in a variety of hobbies and interests. Traveling allows me to explore different cultures and experience the diverse beauty our world has to offer. Additionally, I have a keen interest in electronics, dedicating time to projects and expanding my knowledge in this field. Gardening with native plants is yet another hobby of mine, as it allows me to contribute to the local ecosystem and support biodiversity. Finally, I find solace and tranquility in spending time on Lake Palestine in the Pineywoods, connecting with nature and relishing in the serene surroundings. My love for the outdoors was nurtured during my time as a Boy Scout, where I achieved the rank of Eagle.
